Astoria Federal Savings

The sunset today gave the perfect lighting to this oddly located building.  It's on 10th St, just north of 5th Ave.  By it's facade one would imagine it should be on one of the more commercial avenues, not in this residential block.  I wonder if there's an interesting story behind this location.  The inscription on the entrance dates it to 1886.

I was not always an Astoria Federal Savings Bank

If you walk around the corner and look up at the facade above the current shopping store near 9th Street, you see the stone engraving :Greater New York Saving Bank. This once was a beautiful bank structure and the entrance on 10th Street is just a side entrance to the major one that was on 5th Avenue.
