For Erica

My friend and digital media mentor, Erica, is feeling a bit down today.

Borders: 9th Street

Ask any realtor about the boundaries of Park Slope and you'll get a thousand answers.  Some say Park Slope is only north of 9th Street, some say Park Slope is only north of Prospect Expressway and then refer to anything from Prospect Expressway to Sunset Park as "South Slope" and on and on.  According to the book The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn (a joint publication of Citizens for NYC and Yale University Press) 9th Street is an important border and South Slope does in fact exist.  However, the realtors are spinning a spurious web.  Park Slope's borders are Flatbush Ave (north), Prospect Park West (east), 4th Ave (west), and 17th Street (south).  9th Street divides the neighborhood into "North Slope" and "South Slope" - North Slope being from Flatbush Ave to 9th Street, and South Slope being 9th Street to 17th Street.  Historic Park Slope is different still: it's the Northeast corner of what is now the much larger neighborhood of Park Slope.  Fortunately, no matter how you cut the borders it's all a great place to live!

Do You Know Where This Bank Is?

(It's on the corner of 5th Ave and 9th Street, and is no longer a bank...but the original facade is beautiful and I think often ignored.)
